Ask Obama

March 26th, 2009

You can submit and vote on questions about the economy to President Obama.   This is a continuation of his use of the internet from his campaign – what some call Obama 2.0

It might be interesting, or rather typical the questions that become most popular.  After a quick glance at what is topping the charts so to speak in the 8 or so categories, are two themes… “What about me the responsible mortgage holder?”, and “What about legalizing Marijuana?”

I wonder if there have been some manipulation of votes, and I hope it makes enough sense to keep doing these.  It is after all more appropriate to our times than fireside chats over radio.

Free book: The Difference

Free book: The Difference

at Oprah.com

You need to become a “member”.  Basically sign up.

Read the first few pages, they divide people into these broad categories:
The Wealthy (Ws), the Financially Comfortable (FCs), the Paycheck to Paycheckers (PTPs), and the Further-in- debtors (FIDs).  The first two have some different mindsets and skills, and the premise is that they can be learned.

Happy reading.

Fico Score Estimator

March 12th, 2009

With all the hype about credit scores, it can be intimidating to actually go to one of those sites and put in your personal information.  Some sites tout free reports then they try to sell you something.  Here’s a place to answer a few questions and get a free estimate.  No personal info taken.

There are three companies that report FICO scores and they can have a range of 50 points difference between them.  It took about 5 minutes for me to answer the multiple choice questions and the estimate was spot on for me.

Finding Apartments

Finding Apartments

I’ve only spent a few minutes at this site but it seems to have ranges of rents for different areas, with color coded listings by cost.  Let me know if you find an apartment using this site.

Your Font

Your Font

Sometimes a handwritten note provides that personal touch necessary for that special communication, but if you don’t have the quickest or neatest handwriting it can get tedious.  What if you could create a font for the computer that is your handwriting?

This site allows you to download a PDF template, you fill it out with your handwriting, scan it, send it back to them and they create a truetype font – for free.

I haven’t finished this yet, but will post more details as we get something done.

Lose something?

February 3rd, 2009
Lose something?

There was a time when you left something precious on the subway or bus and you pretty much kissed it good-bye.  The MTA has been working to improve this process, using their web presence.   Assuming it was turned in, you can fill in a web form and try to get it back.

Now, if my bankcard would work at most stations when I really need to buy a metrocard… I’d be a happy camper.

Newseum

Add “Newspaper” to “Museum” and what do you get? Newseum

Actually, its not just newspapers but all aspects of news.  There is a cool section online Today’s Front Pages.     It contains the front pages of several hundred newspapers.  Also available as readable PDFs.  So if you’re feeling homesick for your old town newspaper, it might just be up there.

The physical structure is located in Washington, DC, and houses 14 galleries and 15 theatres.  Topics cover areas from sports, to documentaries, a 9/11 gallery, the “world in pictures”, and there is a food court.

Joe’s goals

Joe's goals

Its a simple concept, list out your goals, give yourself a checkmark every time you achieve it.

This site might seem too simple at first, and may strike you as lacking some whiz bang feature, but in the end its simplicity is a bonus.  You get to spend more time on your new habits, than recording them.

There’s a simple logging feature to distinguish between, for instance, the type of exercise you did (weights, running, yoga, etc.) Or other notes you may want to track.  Maybe, if you are running, you could log your times and PBs (personal bests).

Also you can track negative habits you want to get rid of.  Smoking, over eating, etc.

Lastly there is a badge that you can activate and then paste into your blog, website, myspace, etc.

Free Suze Orman book

January 8th, 2009

Free book to download from Oprah’s site.  Good until the 15th.

2009 Action Plan,  227 pages with chapters on saving, spending, credit, real estate and retirement.

Update:  The section on how the big financial meltdown happened is worth the download and read.  The tone is very conversational – very much like her TV show, which makes for easy reading, if a tad annoying at times.

The advice is laid out in scenario format so its easy to locate sections that apply more closely to your situation.  So far its all making sense and it sounds like good advice.

Suze believes that this downturn may last until 2014 which I agree with.  The stock market may rebound strongly between now and then but the economy may languish for several years.
