Cinnamon Mint Tea

Cinnamon Mint Tea

The Flavia (coffee/tea machine) at work has a mint tea but this sounds like its much better.  Supposedly these ingredients are good for your digestion, and during these dark, cold days and plentiful holidays this might be a nice addition.

Turkey - What's in a name?

Just got this in an email from Ian, a poker buddy.  Figured you all might want to know what was that thing you all ate (and might still be eating). :)

Chatty Bus

November 28th, 2008 No comments

Fully loaded up with the day’s shopping, most of the weary bus riders were content to sway with the bus to and fro in a daze on their way home.  A woman with a rather large box sitting in the front garnered some looks as the newcomers trundled to the rear.

That is until an elderly gentleman chose to ask where she got her stereo system.  She answered that she got it at the Best Buy.  Then there was a flurry of reviews of all the electronics retailers – how Circuit City was this and Radio Shack was that, etc.  More riders joined in, they spoke of where to go and where they had been, how some woke at the crack of dawn to get the Black Friday sales.

Others talked of ordering online, how the store locator didn’t indicate correctly all the Manhattan store locations.  How you could now order online and then pickup!  “What a concept.”  Then it moved to the economy, about how this was a great time for buyers.  How the woman was looking for a new TV to join her new stereo system.

Then she spoke of how she got some great bargains for clothes.  My attention drifted off to the yogurt I wished I had a spoon for.  In Manhattan it sure didn’t seem like the consumers were pulling back.

Time messages

Time messages

I’m reading a comic book, or graphic novel as some of you prefer, that I got from the public library.  Its “X-men Messiah Complex”.  I’ve missed a few chapters in the X-men story.  I like the artwork- yet the time travel plot line gets weary at times.  Not so bad here but in so many Sci-FI stories its an often used tactic.

Makes me think since its so ‘impossible’ that it is so often fantasized about.  I spontaneously asked the other day, “If you could go back in time and give yourself a message, what would it be?”  Maybe there is a spiritual plane where time doesn’t operate the same way and messages can cross.

For me, there are a few moments that I wished I lived differently.  I’d send back “flow” to that first week at Stuy as a freshman in English class.  It was on the tip of my tongue…   I never really got the hang of class participation until much later when someone remarked that I was stingy with sharing my ideas.

“Yes” to a certain invitation that I still think about.  “No” to another one.  “Travel more” to that younger me that thought about taking a year off of school.

Of course, with those ‘regrets’ we will never know for certain what may have happened if we chose the other road.  Would it have been that catastrophic Marty McFly punch that almost ended his life before it started?  We can’t go “back to the future”, but sometimes its very revealing what those messages and moments are for each of us.

Warm night run

November 25th, 2008 No comments

Just got back from an easy 2 mile run in what seemed like balmy warm weather.  I saw my breath a couple times so it must have been somewhat cold- yet it was very comfortable.  After the hard work of really cold weather running this seemed so tranquil and it lulls me into a complacency.

I guess I’m in holiday mode – things to do, but it can wait a few days, no sense in not enjoying it.  Happy gobble gobble!

Insight

November 21st, 2008 No comments

I once read that a wealthy person isn’t someone who has everything, but a person that doesn’t need anything else.  How does that apply to time?   What is time freedom or wealth?

Is it in someone that is so here and now, that there is no regret of the past and no want of the future that he or she just purely exists in the now?  If we were singularly spiritual beings that could be nirvana.

We are more however.  Perhaps its the ease at which we can feed our brains, then rest them while we feed our bodies, and then feed our emotional needs, then go around again.  Some rest time for all of them, some fantastic unity when we use all of ourselves.  Sometimes fast, sometimes slow.  Like a symphony with the brass, winds, strings, and percussion in balance.   There are solos, alternating melodies and backup, teamwork that creates more than the pieces.  There is fun and joy and those moments that aren’t.

Clop, clop, klip clop

November 20th, 2008 No comments

The Asics running tights and Brooks top were keeping me warm enough, yet not too much with another thin long sleeve TShirt.  It felt a little colder than the first run which was around 50 degrees F.  Its darker much earlier and I’m not used to seeing so many other runners in Central Park this far after sunset.

Past the first hill, I’m breathing really hard, but otherwise feeling great.  I think its about 45F, since I’m not sweating at all and I don’t see my breath.   Down the hill now and things are starting to fall into sync.  Not having run enough the last month, I convince myself to take it easy.

Ahead of me I hear some horses, and they are majestic, with their loud hoof beats and nostril flares of white smoke blowing out in front of them.  Its a couple of New York’s Finest and one of them are trying to get his horse to go into a gallop.

I can’t resist the urge and I run faster.  The trailing rider and her horse reluctantly speed up here and there, just enough to make it interesting for me, as if they know I’m trying to catch up.  I run with them for a quarter mile or so.  The hoof beats are thunderous now – I try to entrain to their beat.  The two horses are not quite in sync and I can’t quite ‘feel’ the rhythm.

Out of breathe as they take the turnoff, I slow down near the south end of The Lake and I am pleased.  To turn back or keep going now?  I decide its not that cold after all and keep going down to Columbus Circle.  As I hit that last hill near Sheep’s Meadow, I see that its 29F – I was totally off about the temperature.  The way back home was more quiet and cold without my 4 legged running partners.
