- Running at 10pm in NYC is really pleasant with very few people out
- that is during the summers
- in the winters it seems that is when most of the dogs get their last walk of the night
- its tough to run fast and not tick off one or more of them
- luckily our founding fathers, the ones that commissioned Olmstead
- had the foresight to create Central Park
- which still has dogs off leash at that time
- but they don’t seem to care about me huffing and puffing up some hills
- (they might pity me at that exact moment)
- as I’m so close to myocardial infarction anyway
- fartleks with speedwork up hills and catching my breathe downhill
- that will cure any thoughts about sitting too much
- as I sat on a bus back from AC for 5 hours because two trucks chose to crash into each other inside the Lincoln Tunnel
- Although any negative moment can have its silver lining
- as it was an interesting sociological observation absorbing all the passenger reactions.
- which reminds me of the science of shopping
- a fascinating book about our attitudes and perceptions within retail
- there probably is a transportation or travel equivalent
- I’ve yet to come across
- but considering 50,000 books are written each year
- the science of peoples reactions to travel probably exists
- back to running, I still get a rush when the runners world magazine shows up in the mail
- there was an interesting article about length of workout and immune weakening
- so I may keep my runs to 75 minutes and shorter during flu/cold seasons
- also another article about strengthening the core to help ease repetitive stress injuries
- something about proper alignment of the pelvis
- allowing stronger, surer foot falls
- kinda makes sense, but having difficulty adding these routines to daily workouts, but have to find a way otherwise plateauing will occur.
- that beach and ocean was pretty
- almost free vacations aren’t bad either

One company’s take on “farewell to Bush”.
Not sure where to tag or categorize this one, but found it too creative and bizare to pass up. From what I hear its very painful, and I as a man who will never get one of these; I personally thank all you women out there for all the pain that you go through to make this world just that much more beautiful.
I’ll do a few extra painful reps in the gym in support. Its no consolation.

Add “Newspaper” to “Museum” and what do you get? Newseum
Actually, its not just newspapers but all aspects of news. There is a cool section online Today’s Front Pages. It contains the front pages of several hundred newspapers. Also available as readable PDFs. So if you’re feeling homesick for your old town newspaper, it might just be up there.
The physical structure is located in Washington, DC, and houses 14 galleries and 15 theatres. Topics cover areas from sports, to documentaries, a 9/11 gallery, the “world in pictures”, and there is a food court.

Its a simple concept, list out your goals, give yourself a checkmark every time you achieve it.
This site might seem too simple at first, and may strike you as lacking some whiz bang feature, but in the end its simplicity is a bonus. You get to spend more time on your new habits, than recording them.
There’s a simple logging feature to distinguish between, for instance, the type of exercise you did (weights, running, yoga, etc.) Or other notes you may want to track. Maybe, if you are running, you could log your times and PBs (personal bests).
Also you can track negative habits you want to get rid of. Smoking, over eating, etc.
Lastly there is a badge that you can activate and then paste into your blog, website, myspace, etc.

I was mostly joking yesterday that “it” happens in 3’s. After the two TV actors passed yesterday, and today another famous person, the American Painter, Andrew Wyeth died. I think “Christina’s World” is at MOMA, and Friday nights used to be free.
Check the schedule for current hours.

- listening to berlioz on pandora
- I’ve got a huge red lit keyboard on a small 2 pound netbook right now
- it seems wrong yet it works for me
- Waiter, there’s a plane in my river!
- that was pretty miraculous today – no major injuries
- I can see the made for TV movie already – “Miracle on the Hudson”
- so it took a couple hours to pop up on google top 100 trends page
- then it pretty much dominated it
- with some exceptions like Bush address, sprinkled cupcake?%$%!, and some others I didn’t get a chance to check out yet
- caught gladwell on Kimmel talk show
- they spoke about 10,000 hours to expertise
- I thought about starting a few new habits
- like 1,000 short PHP, python, and perl scripts
- maybe 1,000 miles running for this upcoming running season
- and 1,000 drawings and trades
- could be fun, and as feasible and worthwhile a goal as any
- although not sure what the nexus of these goals and habits are
- what special skillset do they produce?
- maybe throw in some powerpoint stuff and screencasts
- sounds like a busy 2009
- I need to review fair use copyright rules
- could be fun to spruce up the blog with some multimedia
- that’s such a faded/jaded term now
- starting to like this saitek eclipse keyboard
- little “mushy” but its quiet and lit
- why are the migratory birds around here when its so cold anyway?
- or were they just sharing crowded flight lanes going south?
- and we think we can one day have millions of flying cars up there too?
- banks took a hit today…again
- but indices came back even, asia is up now
- there’s a new foldable diamond anniversary Scrabble game
- some nice new features bu they changed the color scheme
- which pissed off some traditionalists
- the quick vote at CNN has almost 80% unfavorable Bush presidency
- …just 5 more days

In efforts to boost the economy, the Fed has lowered overnight lending rates, which in turn have caused mortgage rates to fall. Although, I feel home prices have another 10-20% to go (depending on your locale) this is a good time to start getting a feel for what is out there (supply of homes) and what you can afford.
NY Times article about low rates. And a nice Rent VS Buy calculator.
Seasonally, homes sell more in the spring and early summer. Putting it all out on a limb, my guess is the sweet spot for a home purchase is in later half of 2010.

Free book to download from Oprah’s site. Good until the 15th.
2009 Action Plan, 227 pages with chapters on saving, spending, credit, real estate and retirement.
Update: The section on how the big financial meltdown happened is worth the download and read. The tone is very conversational – very much like her TV show, which makes for easy reading, if a tad annoying at times.
The advice is laid out in scenario format so its easy to locate sections that apply more closely to your situation. So far its all making sense and it sounds like good advice.
Suze believes that this downturn may last until 2014 which I agree with. The stock market may rebound strongly between now and then but the economy may languish for several years.

- sleep – these darks days have contributed to me going off schedule
- its late, but a quick nap has me wide awake…again
- that computer book on powerpoint will likely do the insomniac trick
- middle east is at it again- that’s depressing if you let it get to you
- so much for trying to get in a library fine-less year
- made it 5 days, maybe next year
- all things seem to come in waves, and reserved books at NYPL is no exception
- trying to read more and faster, but can’t seem to cover all my interests
- should minimally scan all the books first, so I can better prioritize
- first attempts at a better reading/diversion/exercise rotation has been good
- this was first thought off during my trading as a living period
- chunking by setting routine breaks actually allows me to digest more information or get more done
- which may seem counterintuitive at first
- but yet it works
- and burns some extra calories during the day as a bonus
- combined with a steady water drinking habit
- it becomes a nice detox benefit too
- I like the buddhist concept of good and bad seeds in all of us
- just that we need to acknowledge the bad seeds
- and nurture the good ones more
- otherwise we find ourselves doing bad things for no good reasons
- like watching TV for hours and hours to dull our senses
- or eating all the Ice Cream
- or shopping for yet another thing we don’t have money or space for
- or worse…
- its OK and actually very healing to notice these trends in us, and actually smile when we catch ourselves and postpone that bad automatic desire or craving
- and take a deep breath in and let it out with a smile
- which is an addictive habit but in a good way
- as I notice I’m smiling more because random strangers are smiling back at me
- I came across a nice quote today
- Random Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty
- I helped someone carry groceries for a ways
- she was receptive to the help
- which is more rare than you’d think sometimes
- as the world conspires to cause people to be so suspicious sometimes
- but she thanked me with a smile
- you know recessions can be bad things, but they can be good things if you make it so
- like it causes you to focus on some more important things
